The best thing I’ve read about niches and why you need one.

June 25th, 2008  |  Published in Authenticity In Entrepreneurship, Marketing  |  4 Comments

My friend Gina just gave the best explanation I have ever read about why we need a niche. I absolutely love what she says in her recent personal blog post.

Gina starts out by talking about this idea that we, as healers, all relate to. Can’t we help absolutely anyone with our service? And isn’t the point of our existence to be limitless and to “flow organically and cyclically like nature?” Aren’t we all one?

Well yeah. But we’re also physical. And I love what Gina says about this aspect of our lives. Especially “Only through being very clear about what one says yes to can any momentum and power be generated toward moving us along our individual paths. Without the focus, the boundaries, the limitations, the energy is just dispersed and rendered ineffectual.”

Yes yes yes!!! Exactly! And this is why choosing a niche and focusing your business - or any of your efforts - is so important.

In this vast Universe that we live in - and for all the One-ness that we all are… we’re still human. We all have human, physical limits.

So if you want to be heard, you must focus your efforts - as much as that may feel wrong or uncomfortable. It is exactly right.

Gina, thank you for offering this very powerful post!

Wow. thanks for the kudos Jenn. This is a subject that I still meditate on and get deeper insight about daily. I posted this in the ‘update’ at the end of my blog, but I’ll reiterate.. the visual of a creating a container really works for me.. a magic circle, if you will. And, hey, that container can be REALLY big if you want it to be! LOL! Haiku is another great example of endless possibility and beauty within a well-defined structure.

Funny, here’s my planner quote from Monday: ” a man who trims himself to suit everybody will soon whittle himself away.” - charles schwab

    Thank you again.. peace!

I think another factor in this is if we try to talk to everyone, we end up talking to no-one. In our marketing efforts, we are trying to start a conversation. Imagine going to a party and attempting to have a conversation with everyone at the same time! When we narrow our niche we can then know who we are talking to. It doesn’t mean we can never service someone outside of our niche - I know I have clients that are not related to my niche of Life Passion coaching. Niching is all about the marketing conversation.

Katherine - I love the visual of being at a party and trying to talk to everyone at once - beautiful!

Gina - I love that quote from your planner. Awesome.

I think the big thing to remember about marketing in general is, it’s how you build relationships with people. And when you think of it in that context, you can see how shouting with a bull horn at everyone won’t work… but being authentic and genuine, and really addressing needs will absolutely work :)

Oooh, I love that quote in Gina’s planner!!!! Love it!

And that is so true - funny, I talk about focus and boundaries so OFTEN (but with regards to goals and time-management) and this is a beautiful picture relating to niche :)
