How to Build Your List
August 12th, 2008 | Published in Building an Internet Business, Effective Newsletters, Marketing | 1 Comment
When I’m asked what the #1 marketing tactic is that I use for my business, hands down, it’s my newsletter. And in addition to that, it’s having subscribers to my newsletter. 90 to 95% of my sales come from people who subscribe to my newsletter. And that is because, through my newsletter, I am building genuine relationships with people.
I enjoy hearing from and getting to know my subscribers. And my newsletter is a great way for them to get to know me.
Having a newsletter is only 1 part of the process - the other part is finding people that need you and who are interested in building a relationship with you through your newsletter.
When it comes to telling people about your work, there are many things you can do to get your name out there.
Here are 5 that work really well for me:
1. Joint Ventures or strategic partnerships. This is where you partner with other business owners who share your niche and promote each other.
You might interview each other for your blogs, or swap e-zine ads or write guest articles for each other’s newsletter.
2. Online discussion groups or networking groups. Find groups where your niche is hanging out and get to know the members.
Post your introduction and join in the conversations.
This strategy only works if you’re truly interested in building relationships with the people in the group. So be sure and join groups that inspire you.
3. Article Marketing. You can submit articles online to article banks or to publications that reach your niche.
Be sure and include a resource box with your articles that tells the people that need you, how to subscribe to your newsletter and stay in touch with you.
4. Blogging. You can use your blog as a vehicle to build relationships, and you can also use it to help people find you.
Participate in blog carnivals by going to Blogcarnival.com and submitting your posts to relevant carnivals. Or,regularly participate in other blog communities by leaving comments that add value to the community.
5. Speaking and Teaching. Being in front of people in a live setting is a great way to get the message out about what you do.
Be sure you invite participants to sign up for your newsletter so that they can stay in touch and discover ways that you can be in service to them.
I invite you to brainstorm ways that you can try 1, 2 or all of these strategies over the coming weeks. If you decide to try them, I’d love to hear about your experience and your progress.

Hi, Jenn!
Great article… like the part about exchanging interviews. Newsletters can be very tricky, and I think that by offering something of value, people will actually read it.
