Do you feel overwhelmed?

February 8th, 2008  |  Published in Authenticity In Entrepreneurship  |  1 Comment

I know there are times I do. I’ve been having a blog conversation with Katherine and Teresa, and Katherine brought up a good point in her post. She says: “I rarely get everything on my goal list done. I am a single mother of 3 and my life just isn’t that predictable.”

Excellent point Katherine. Life rarely goes along in exactly the way we think it’s going to. We start our to-do list Monday morning and all of the sudden, the phone rings, or we get an e-mail that completely changes the course of our day.

It’s important to build time and space into your to-do list to honor life’s unexpected opportunities.

Sometimes, the opportunities can take up way more time than we anticipated, and we end up off course. By the time we come back, the to-do list seems insurmountable. A feeling of overwhelm sets in, and we end up stalled instead of forging ahead.

What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Are you more likely to give yourself a break and chart a new course, or do you beat yourself up for not staying on track?

I work from home and it is tough to get everything done that we want to in the day. I used to try to schedule my “chores,” but that drastically failed. What I found to work was to designate certain things to do at half hour increments.

For example: My children are all in school and I’m home by 9am. At that point I feed the baby and get her down for her morning nap. So I designated 9:30-10am to get housework done. Whatever needed to be done. Whether it was laundry, dishes, sweeping, vacuuming. I worked until 10am. Then from 10-10:30 was work time! I allowed myself to make calls and check emails for my business. Then it was time to pack up the baby and pick up my son. When we got home it was lunch and nap time and I started the process all over again in the afternoon. Evening is just crazy and I do what I can then!!

I hope this helps! It has been working wonderfully for me! I get my housework done, get to play with my children, AND work my business. And this all keeps the hubby happy which makes our home a happy place if you know what I mean!!
